A thriving neighborhood is comprised of two essential components, its residents and the businesses that service them. When these components are harmonious the benefits are manifold. The merchants prosper and the residents have easy access to commercial fulfillment. The Galt Merchants Association, an active member of the Galt Mile Community Association, was created to accomplish and promote this mutually advantageous relationship.

The Galt Mile Community has convenient access to every concievable category of product and/or service. The businesses providing this accomodation are extremely sensitive to the needs and desires of its clientele. The Galt Merchants Association serves as a pro-active "duplex barometer" enacted to define our residents' commercial needs and promote those merchants who successfully satisfy them. The result is a highly diversified, competitive, and responsive collection of competent, helpful, and friendly vendors and service personnel.

This Web Site reflects the various categories of member businesses and services as well as the individual vendors in each of the included categories. To navigate efficiently, simply ascertain which category is pertinent to your concerns and CLICK on the appropriate button from the menu on the right side of this page. You will then be presented with an alphabetically sorted contact list including all of the available merchants in your selected category. The Galt Merchants Association is currently engaged in an effort to upgrade the entire Galt Ocean Shoppes area. 32^nd Street Alley Partnership

The inadequate drainage in the alley between NE 32^nd Street and Oakland Park Boulevard has been the target of several prior unsuccessful municipal improvement attempts. In 1996, the stagnant water induced a portion of the infrastructure to collapse. Should the polluted pond be discharged into the stormwater drains, it would infuse our rivers, lakes, and canals with noxious and toxic materials. The Galt Merchants Association, the Galt Mile Community Association, local merchants, businesses, and the City of Fort Lauderdale have formed the 32^nd Street Alley Partnership to finally address this persistent problem. The Galt Ocean Shoppes Improvement Association, Inc. has created a wonderful new web site. It celebrates the catharsis that the neighborhood is undergoing. Among the exciting improvements to the Galt Ocean Village Shoppes area are scintillating new vendors, cool restaurants and hot theme bars. It is a critically important commercial adjunct to the Galt Mile neighborhood.

The web site is aptly named after the side street that's central to the community's rebirth, NE 33^rd Street. Called Destination 33rd, the site offers a huge amount of information about the explosively successful new event that floods the area every Sunday evening between 6 PM and 10 PM - the Sunset Blues Block Party. The member merchants have created a shopping website for our 14,000 Galt Mile residents. It offers an enticing blend of special deals, exciting events and Grand Opening announcements by new vendors.

The pages of the site correspond to the neighborhoods streets, emulating interactive maps. By surfing the site, one can view the merchants on Oakland Park Boulevard, NE 32^nd Street, NE 33^rd Street, NE 34^th Street and important vendors on the connecting Avenues. Many of the map graphics representing the block's merchants are linked to their respective web sites.

August 26, 2009 - The Sunset Blue Block Party is redefining the old-fashioned neighborhood wing-ding – it virtually explodes with cool blues, box-banging bands and packaged fun on the run. On Sundays between 6 PM and 10 PM, NE 33^rd Street undergoes a dimensional severance from the surrounding world as the whole block fills with stalls, tents, tables, hippies, retirees, philosophers, hot bodies, pedestrian artists and people marching around in ever-diminishing circles while attempting to communicate telepathically with their pets. Live music, food, drinks and booths from local bars, restaurants and businesses energize the entire Galt Ocean Shoppes neighborhood. The party area is just north of Oakland Park Boulevard, east of the Intracoastal and west of A1A. Sunset Blue is a FREE community event conceived by the Galt Ocean Shoppes Improvement Association, Inc .

For years, Galt Mile community activists tried to stimulate interest in this little commercial corner of our neighborhood. Thousands of planning hours were devoted to shaping the Galt Ocean Village Shoppes area into a destination location attractive to tourists as well as locals. Given its proximity to the beach, a stable nearby residential base, unfettered access and egress, both merchants and residents have long nurtured that belief that the area boasted many of the characteristics and qualities required to compete with Las Olas, Worth Avenue and other popular South Florida destination sites. The late Dr. Alex Leeds, a local civic force of nature, teamed with Larry Blacke, Ralph Hamaker, Bob Rozema, Gwen Rubino, the Galt Mile Community Association and assorted local merchants to ultimately attract the Beach Community Center and Il Lugano in an effort to anchor the community’s evolving commercial component. Over the years, District 1 City Commissioners have historically supported measures aimed at an area reincarnation, including John Aurelius, Gloria Katz, Christine Teel and most recently Bruce Roberts.

Unfortunately, the intermittently heavy annual merchant turnover clouded the neighborhood’s prospects by fueling a reputation for instability. Ironically, it was that predisposition for change and the evolving commercial institutions that ultimately produced the community’s current merchant menu. The fortuitous current blend of vendors has created a synergism of sorts. Every Sunday through September 20, 2009, NE 33^rd Street morphs into an incredible BLOCK PARTY! Jazz Bars and restaurants like Blue Jean Blues, the Dive Bar and Fish Tales anchor the event. The block becomes a magnet for clothing stalls, soap vendors, food stalls and a wide variety of ambitious opportunists merchandising an eclectic assortment of goods and services. Cold beer, t-shirts and pizza are always within arms distance - along with a laudable lineup of noteworthy musical icons.

The casual concerts are fantastic. Some of the best music in South Florida radiates from NE 33^rd Street every Sunday evening. Emanating from an outdoor stage erected for the event, the sounds engage partygoers as they stroll from booth to shop to bar to eatery. Sunset Blue is clearly the coolest - and most successful - buzz to hit the Galt Mile in years. In July, headliners such as Charlie (#1 Top Seller on Masterbeat.com and #9 on Billboard - unbelievable voice), the Joey Gilmore Band (At the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, they outscored all bands worldwide while showcasing his amazing talent at the blues industry event - nailing recognition as the best unsigned band on the planet), Mr. Nice Guy (MNG is one of the area’s most popular classic rock groups), Billy Vasquez (unworldly Blues guitarist), Troy Anderson and The Wonderful World Band (killer headliners at O’Hara’s on Las Olas).

March 1, 2010 - According to the Sunset Blue Block Party web page, the event will continue on the third Sunday of each month. This extended schedule will help maintain the momentum this watershed event contributes toward development of the Galt Ocean Village Shoppes neighborhood.

Originally authorized through September 20^th, locals extended the event for another five months (through February). Starting in March, it is scheduled for the third Sunday of each month. Longtime area residents view this event as an opportunity to finally stabilize this historically erratic commercial neighborhood, prospectively attracting more customers and a better class of local enterprise. In addition to providing local residents with an improved shopping experience, a thriving commercial area would enhance local development and help stabilize property values throughout the entire community. Il Lugano – A Community Anchor

The Village at Galt Ocean Mile is a wide-paved, landscaped neighborhood filled with cafés and upscale boutiques. For years, the commercial district located between A1A and the intracoastal just north of Oakland Park Boulevard, evolved through multiple incarnations. Trendy restaurants opened and closed overnight. Curio shops, nail salons, thrift shops, popular night clubs and nostalgia-style antique merchants seemed to ride a revolving treadmill of intermittent success. Galt Mile residents responded to the community motto, “Patronize Galt Merchants!” Unfortunately, one couldn’t know whether a particular merchant would still be there for a second visit. Despite the area’s ever-changing composition, the eclectic combination of shops attracted visitors from all over the city. The Galt Mile Community Association attempted to find a formula that would bring stability to the neighborhood’s ephemeral identity. The area desperately needed some substantial enterprises to serve as anchors for the artsy establishments. Enter: The City’s Beach Community Center. The Center is a fantastic magnet for locals interested in classes and workshops in Taikwondo, computers, health, art and dozens of other disciplines. It serves as a meeting place for civic and neighborhood organizations. It’s also a terrific facility for business conventions and meetings. Unfortunately, the closest “appropriate” quarters for business travelers or visiting politicians are on Federal Highway or about 2 miles north on A1A. The community was still missing a critical piece of its “master plan” puzzle - a top-notch short and extended stay condominium/hotel. That piece is no longer missing.

Developer Robert M. Couf spent the past few years diagnosing the Galt Mile’s “community planning” dilemma. Chairman of Fort Lauderdale-based Cartage, Inc, Couf has extensive experience with resort projects - both in the United States and the Caribbean - having built master-planned residential communities and mixed-used commercial properties. Realizing that a standard hotel would only address part of the neighborhood’s needs, he investigated cutting edge alternatives with the ingredients necessary to guarantee the area’s future stability. Couf’s unique prescription for the community was a condominium hotel residence catering to both business travelers and vacationers. The condominium hotel residence concept, which is becoming increasingly popular with both the business and leisure markets, combines the amenities of home with the management and convenience of a major hotel brand.

Barely heard-of just a decade ago, condominium hotels have recently become a hot concept in the hotel industry, with new construction now outpacing more traditional hotel accommodations. As this new phenomenon addresses a long-ignored need for flexibility in the hospitality industry, every major hotel chain is committing substantial resources to participate in this niche. To explain the formula components of his project, Couf summarized, “By having a world-class hotel management team, which emphasizes high quality and guest satisfaction, a prime waterfront location and the appeals of ‘The Village’, the hotel will attract residents and guests who want to visit and live in this desirable location.”

With the “vehicle” ascertained, Couf enlisted the services of a prominent Florida design legacy, Revuelta Vega Leon. An architectural group with a rich history in the South Florida area, Revuelta Vega Leon P.A. has been involved with several multi-million dollar projects located within historic districts such as South Beach (the 17 story Il Villaggio Condominiums) and the Brickell area in Miami (the 51 story Santa Maria Condominium, the 40 story Bristol Tower Condominium). In Fort Lauderdale, they designed La Rive at 525 Bayshore Drive and Alhambra Place at 209 N Birch Road.

Couf also secured the talents of Lynn Wilson Associates International, a world renowned 5 Star Interior Design firm based in Miami (116 Alhambra Circle) with affiliated offices in Paris, Los Angeles and Costa Rica. Her design credits include Queen Elizabeth’s Windlesham Moore Estate in Ascot, England, the Al-Bustan and Princeton Hotels for His Royal Highness Sheikh Hamden Maktoum in the United Arab Emirates and Taj Mahal in India. Prestigious local references include the Biltmore and Boca Raton Hotels, the Grove Isle Hotel & Club in Coconut Grove and the Fontainebleau Hilton in Miami Beach. Along with Il Lugano, they count the Regent South Beach at 1458 Ocean Drive in Miami Beach and the Atlantic on Fort Lauderdale beach among the condominium hotels in their portfolio.

Local merchants, having seen the city put “its wallet where its mouth is” in the Beach Community Center, followed the city’s lead. Upscale restaurants and shops also put resources into renovation and expansion. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), while recently upgrading the entire southeast traffic access to the “Village”, adorned adjacent streets with pavered crosswalks, new landscaping and new traffic signals. When Couf revealed his plan, community redevelopment slipped into high gear. The prospect of a high-end condominium hotel across from the Community Center elicited a tidal wave of local support. It whizzed through Planning and Zoning despite an anti-development political environment. The Galt Ocean Shoppes neighborhood – “The Village” - a target destination for shoppers, strollers and tourists, was being prepared to provide serious competition to Las Olas Boulevard.

The 14-story Il Lugano Condominium Hotel, a $70 million waterfront property, offers 24 residential units and 105 condominium residential hotel suites. Resort style amenities include complimentary breakfasts on the waterfront, a 24-hour attended reception area, concierge, maid service, valet parking, business and conference facilities, on-site sundry shop, a state-of-the-art fitness center, an oversized 60’ lap pool, and deep-sea fishing excursions departing from Il Lugano’s dock on the intracoastal. For the buyer who prefers to come-and-go via water, twelve 50’ boat slip are also being offered for sale, available to purchasers of Il Lugano’s private residences. Il Lugano’s condominium hotel units will offer spacious suites with 9-foot ceilings, individual washer/dryers and high-end design kitchens with European style cabinetry, granite countertops, glass ceramic cooktops, full refrigerators, Kohler faucets, dishwashers, microwaves, and food waste disposals. Units sport large glass-balconied living rooms, marble baths, cable TV, wireless and high speed internet access. Of course, theatre size full-service meeting facilities are conveniently available directly across the street at the Fort Lauderdale Beach Community Center. Less than a 5-minute stroll (two-minute ride) to the world-class Galt Mile beach, it should easily monopolize local business travel and attract other high-end leisure visitors. “The intent is to provide residents and guests with a neighborhood experience. A shuttle to the beach will run all day, and water taxis to downtown Fort Lauderdale will leave from our dock. It’s exceptional in terms of location and convenience,” states developer Couf. Construction is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2006.

The concept invites residents to partner with the existing development team through the purchase of condominium units. On nights when the suite is not occupied by the purchaser, it can revert to abetting the hotel’s room inventory, returning substantial investment income to the owner. Owing to the development team’s strong track record, the project’s high-end design, and positive market factors that include a trend toward condominium hotel residence accommodations and Fort Lauderdale’s robust real estate environment, assorted business professionals and corporations have already gobbled up more than 50% of units.

The floor plans are flexible and can be connected to satisfy a need for larger accommodations. Prices allow for a wide range of participation, starting at $275,000 for residential hotel suites, $785,000 for private condominium residences. The Sales Center is located at 3432 N Ocean Boulevard (A1A) in Fort Lauderdale. From I-95 exit Oakland Park Blvd., east to A1A. At A1A make a left (north) to 34^th Street. The Sales Center is on the right (east side) just north of 34^th Street and is open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm, and Sundays from 11am to 5pm.

The Galt Merchants Association has transformed a $15,000 capital improvement program grant received from the City of Fort Lauderdale into a viable and exciting Master Plan designed to morph the Galt Ocean Village Shops into a vibrant tourist magnet and an exemplary commercial success. City of Fort Lauderdale Project Engineer, Hal Barnes presented the project's details at a January 15^th Town Hall style meeting at the Beach Community Center to hundreds of area residents and local merchants. Galt Merchants Association President Alex Leeds, M.D. narrated a brief chronology of the project's history and presented the Architectural Alliance's vision for the Galt Ocean Village Shops.

The Master Plan serves to heighten the aesthetics, functionality, and economic viability of the area bounded by the Intracoastal Waterway on the west, A1A on the east, Oakland Park Boulevard on the south, and NE 34^th Street on the north. The lowest responsible bidder of the firms invited to design the master plan was Architectural Alliance in the amount of $14,500. The establishment of a mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly area with the appropriate infrastructure enhancements and amenities, traffic flow and parking considerations, and the accompanying visual enrichment afforded by decorative sidewalks, brick paver inserts, special lighting, and new landscaping will transform this area into a "destination" place for locals and tourists.

The formula to be implemented by the Architectural Alliance is anchored by a potpurri of storefront, streetscape, and waterfront improvements carefully designed to enhance the catchment area. The plan integrates increased lighting to heighten visitors' comfort levels about safety and better sidewalk connections between shops to facilitate browsing as well as shopping. Sidewalks will be widened to accomodate outdoor café use. Traffic flow will benefit from a user-friendly on-street parking reconfiguration. The plan supports a garage for the anticipated increased parking needs. The aesthetic improvements include a street tree program while eye-catching Round Abouts with fountains will punctuate a pedestrian thoroughfare that intersects the streets.

Architectural Alliance's comprehensive planning approach incorporates the Intracoastal Waterway into the visitor's experience. Waterfront development is an essential component of the project. Pedestrian Promenade upgrades and intermittant water taxi stations will provide an additional gateway to the area while taking aesthetic advantage of our bordering Intracoastal resource. A Waterfront Park is projected to abut one of the planned water taxi stops.

Dr. Alex Leeds has spearheaded this effort from its inception, nursing the project through a plethora of governmental obstacles. He points out that the Galt Ocean Shops development has all the attributes necessary to create a "Las Olas North", capable of attracting tourism and investment. Dr. Leeds' enthusiasm about the project yields a kind of contagious excitement in local residents and merchants. If he is successful in bringing this effort to fruition, the entire Galt Mile Community will be the beneficiary. Galt Shoppes Master Plan

This is a projected overview of the proposed improvements and the existing structures in the target area. The two rectangular dark orange shapes on the far left are existing condominiums on the Intracoastal Waterway. The two other dark orange shapes are proposed or future developments.
